A Great Match for a Seafood Salad- Quattro Leoni 2008 Monferrato Bianco

Often, when I don’t feel like cooking something elaborate, I will throw together a salad for a quick, healthy dinner.  A few nights ago, I made a great salad with shrimp, crab meat, avocado, and an array of other great veggies with a light vinaigrette (wish I had taken a picture!).  It was a great salad and even better with Quattro Leoni 2008 Monferrato Bianco.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Quattro Leoni 2008 Monferrato Bianco is a sustainable blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Cortese from the Piedmonte region of Italy.  It has 12% alcohol and retails for $16.99.   For more information see www.marquee.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

This Monferrato pours a rich gold in the glass.  The crisp nose has intermingling aromas of pear, citrus, and a hint of grassiness.  The palate is smooth with soft tastes of citrus, nectarine, and pear.  At mid-palate, the Sauvignon Blanc shines through and you can taste notes of grassiness.  The wine has a medium finish with a nice dose of lively acidity.  A nice wine and the perfect match for our wonderful seafood salad!

My Wine Rating- B

Food Pairing Suggestions- This wine pairs perfectly with a shellfish salad, shrimp scampi, or grilled chicken with pasta.

2009 blue fin Vinho Verde - Instant Refreshment

2009 blue fin Vinho Verde Best White Wines Under $20

75% Trajadura,  25% Alvarinho

from Portugal. SRP of $11 and available at that price.

Sample received courtesy Marquee Cellars for review purposes.

From the bottle:

"Vinho Verde is the classic Portugese white wine, it marries beautifully with the fresh fish and seafood that is the tradition of this maritime nation. Light bodied with fresh fruit and citrus aromas, it is soft and floral. In the mouth it is round, fresh and persistent with good structure and balanced acidity. It should be served well chilled.

11.0% Alcohol"

Vinho Verde

is a Portugese wine from the northern part of the country that can consist of several different varieties of grapes and can be either red or white. Vinho Verde literally means "green wine" as you can sometimes see a slight green tinge on the edges of the wine in the glass. The wines are typically very light and fresh, and that is the case here.

The 2009 blue fin Vinho Verde begins with aromas of tropical fruit, flowers, and a little banana. The wine is light and lean, showcasing its citrus and tropical fruit flavors and its delightfully fizzy refreshing style. (It's not a sparkling wine, but it does have a little fizz to it.) The finish is dry and fruity with crisp tropical fruit flavors that linger enticing you to take another sip. Let me just say it's good thing this wine is only 11% alcohol because it will go fast. I was a little worried it would hold up on day 2, but it was just fine. An excellent wine. Best served nicely chilled.

Wrapping up my Labor Day Weekend Picks with Pianissimo 2010 Organic Malbec Rosé

The last wine in my series of end of summer wine picks is an organic Rosé of Malbec from Caligiore Organic Wines.  We enjoyed this bottle last weekend as an apéritif and it turned out to be a wonderful wine to sip as we relaxed on a warm summer afternoon.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Pianissimo is a Rosé made from organic Malbec from the Medoza region of Argentina.  It has 13% alcohol and retails for $9.99.  For more information see the winery at http://www.caligiore.com.ar/ or the importer at www.Marquee.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

Pianissimo pours a captivating raspberry color in the glass.  The nose has fruity aromas of cherry and strawberry.  The palate is delicate with sweet tastes of strawberries, raspberries, and plum.  The sweetness is nicely balanced with the wine’s dry finish.  A really perfect way to start of your Labor Day weekend celebrations.  Cheers!

My Wine Rating- B

Food Pairing Suggestions- This Rosé is easy to sip on its own or could be paired with a seafood salad or hotdogs and sausages off the grill.

A New Release from Bodegas La Purisma- Capa Rota 2009 Monastrell Syrah

Posted on by wineandgoodfood Leave a comment

So while I said I was done with my Labor Day weekend wine recommendations, I just enjoyed another bottle that is perfect for your long weekend.  Bodegas La Pursima, a winery in Spain, just released a new blend of Monastrell and Syrah in the US.  Monastrell is a great match for grilled meats and this bottle provides an exceptional value.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Capa Rota Monastrell Syrah is a blend of 70% Monastrell and 30% Syrah from the Yecla region in Spain.  It has 13.5% alcohol and retails for $9.99.  For more information see the winery at www.bodegaslapurisima.com or the importer at www.marquee.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

This blend pours a deep ruby in the glass.  The nose is enticing with smokey notes of dark berries.  The wine opens up with rich tastes of jammy blackberries and raspberries.  Hints of cherries and plum are surrounded by flexible tannins.  The wine has a lively, spicy finish that mellows the jamminess of the fruit.  A balanced blend perfect for grilled meats that is a great find for under $10!

My Wine Rating- B

Food Pairing Suggestions- This wine is perfect for grilled pork chops, grilled lamb, or paella.

This past weekend I had a chance to try a couple of new wines that are perfect for your upcoming Labor Day weekend festivities (or for any time you just want a great, nicely priced bottle of wine).  On Saturday, we grilled up some burgers and opened a bottle of Staccato 2010 Organic Malbec/Cabernet Blend from Caligiore Organic Wines.  It is an eco-friendly wine made from organically grown grapes and was the perfect pairing with our burgers.

About the Wine- From the Winery

Staccato is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet from the Mendoza region of Argentina.  It has 13.9% alcohol and retails for $9.99.  For more information see the winery at http://www.caligiore.com.ar/ or the importer at www.Marquee.com

Now the Fun Part- Tasting the Wine

The Staccato pours a bright ruby in the glass.  The nose is simple with floral and cherry aromas.  This blend has big, sweet cherry flavors that are smooth and bright.  It shows nice balance with firm tannins and finishes with a bit of pepper.  Straightforward and easy to sip…a great find for $9.99!

My Wine Rating- B

Food Pairing Suggestions- This blend pairs nicely with burgers, grilled pork chops, or a cheese pizza

2010 Caligiore Staccato Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon

Deliciously fruity and complex.

60% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and made with organically grown grapes. Available for $10. Sample received courtesy Marquee Selections for review purposes.

From the bottle:

"Mendoza Red Wine
Concentrated Malbec and silky Cabernet Sauvignon are blended to create a delicious red wine with dark cherry & blackberry flavors, spicy notes, and smooth tannins. A wine to complement your cuisine; try with grilled meats, roast beef or hearty sauces.
13.9% Alcohol."

Caligiore is an organic producer in Argentina imported by

Marquee Selections

which focuses on organic and green producers. The Malbec used in this blend comes from 80 year old vines, and according to their

website

these wines are not aged in wood in an effort to let the quality of the grape shine through. I can't tell you if these production methods really make a difference but I can tell you that this wine is very good.

The 2010 Caligiore Staccato Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of ripe fruit, blackberry, spice, and flowers. Don't be afraid to give this wine some time to breathe as you will be rewarded for it -- it tastes good right out of the bottle, but it gets even better with some air. This wine has a lot of fruit with flavors of cherry and blackberry. It is medium-bodied and balanced with smooth but firm tannins on the finish. It shows some good complexity with distinct differences between the palate and the finish. We found this wine to be even better on day 2 as the tannins smoothed out a bit more, and the nose was still very strong. Excellent!

THE WINEMAKER'S ART Gustavo Caligiore

The Caligiore family bought the 17-acre Finca La Marolina in Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo district in 1969. This vineyard had been planted to Malbec since 1930, but the family sold off its grapes to area vintners until third-generation Gustavo Caligiore took the reins in 2001. In 2000, the 35-acre Finca Cayanta vineyard was purchased to add Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bonarda, and Syrah to Caligiore’s production. The family established an organic winery three years later and, in 2007, constructed a larger building with a 130,000-liter capacity to accommodate its growing business.

All of Caligiore’s wine is produced under international organic standards, and 95% is exported. Current offerings include organic Malbec, Bonarda, and Syrah wines, with a total annual production of 5,000 cases. Plans for an organic Torrontés and a Malbec rosé are in the works.

November 11th, 2009 Kansas City Wine Examiner - Dennis Schaefer

Torrontes is not a widely known grape varietal in this country, perhaps because little, if any, is planted here. Torrontes, however, is the signature white wine grape of Argentina, just as Malbec is their corresponding signature red grape varietal.

Wine Review | 2008 Marquee Mendoza Grazioso
Wednesday,  July 15, 2009

2008 Marquee Mendoza Grazioso ($8.99)

From Argentina's Mendoza region, the new vintage of whimsically named (and organic) Grazioso is now 100 percent torrontes grapes (it had been 40 percent in the prior vintage).

A fresh-tasting white with herbaceous notes and hints of muscat aromatics, it's quite dry and takes well to being served chilled. Ideal with spicy Asian foods, it's also a good accompaniment to any main dish that includes fruit as one of its ingredients.

The wine is stocked at Giant Eagle Sawmill, Grapes of Mirth, Tutto Vino, Twisted Vine, Weiland's and Whole Foods Sawmill.

Bodegas La Purisima 2006 Old Hands Monastrell

Yelca $11. A bit heavy and raisiny, but still this wine gets it right. The body, nose and everything else about it is rich and robust, but while it pushes candied fruit to the brink, it draws back and showcases brandied cherry, toffee, chocolate and other rewarding flavors in a good way. Sticky and sweet for sure, but not unctuous or cloying.

Wednesday,  June 3, 2009

2008 Marquee Mendoza Staccato ($8.99)

Made organically, Staccato is one of the whimsically named wines Marquee is bringing in from Argentina's Mendoza district at great prices.

A blend of 60 percent malbec and 40 percent cabernet sauvignon, it exhibits aromas and flavors of bramble berries, with a moderately tannic finish. It's blessed with good balance -- it won't overpower or deaden the taste buds.

It is carried by Andersons Sawmill, Carfagna's, Giant Eagle Sawmill, Grapes of Mirth, Tutto Vino, Twisted Vine, Vino 100 Short North, Weiland's and Whole Foods.

2007 Old Hands Yecla Sauvignon Blanc by Bodegas La Purisima ($9.99)

The high, cool elevation in southeastern Spain where the grapes for this dry white are grown accounts for its fresh, floral notes as well as its low-alcohol finish.

The wine is refreshing yet still serious enough to accompany a wide range of foods, from olives to hummus to roast chicken.

It is in stock at Weiland's.
